Canada's Sum 41 became a defining force in the post-Green Day pop-punk revival on the strength of its catchy melodies and explosive live performances.
The classic Sum 41 lineup - lead vocalist and guitarist Deryck Whibley, lead guitarist Dave Baksh, bassist Jason "Cone" McCaslin and drummer Steve Jocz - formed in Ajax, Ont. Their music drew inspiration from latter-day punk icons like NOFX and Blink-182, as well as incorporating elements of metal and alternative rock.
Sum 41's debut LP, 2001's All Killer No Filler, was an unexpected commercial success thanks to the hit singles "Fat Lip" and "In Too Deep." The follow-up, Does This Look Infected?, maintained their punk roots while delving into darker themes, highlighted by the hit "Still Waiting." Sum 41 continued recording and touring more than two decades, but in 2023 announced plans to retire in the wake of its final LP, Heaven and Hell.
